Video Identification of Reef Fish for Stock Assessment Stock assessment scientists need information on the sizes of reef fish, however, this information is rarely available unless the fish is caught. Develop a stereo/video/lidar gadget and image processing workflow that is affordable and can reliably generate fish lengths for fisheries management.
CalCOFI Keywords: Fisheries Management, Image Processing Mining Satellite Imagery for Ocean Health MonitoringDevelop a system that ingests satellite data for environmental monitoring. Applications include oil spill detection, water pollution, and coastal erosion tracking.
Capella Space Keywords: Remote Sensing, Environmental Monitoring, Image Processing Real-time Inundation MonitoringDesign a cost-effective, structurally resilient, real-time water level monitoring system to provide inundation warnings to vulnerable coastline communities. The design needs to include robust mounting and housing of buried pressure sensors and real-time data acquisition and synthesis.
Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Keywords: Coastal Resilience and Adaptation, Hardware Engineering How does Oceanographic Variability Inform Seasonal Fishery Projections?Design a tool that connects IOOS data to Integrated Ecosystem Assessments to better inform Maximum Yield Stock Assessments
Harmful Algal Bloom and Dungeness Crab ClosuresProduce a seasonal model for predicting risk of Dungeness crab closure from harmful algal blooms through use of an operational, daily harmful algal bloom model.
SCCOOS and CeNCOOS Keywords: Fisheries Monitoring, Computer Science New Techniques for Monitoring Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) FishingUse fishing vessel trackers (VMS or AIS) to ensure that fishing vessels are operating according to international mandates on fishing location such that when vessels come in to offload their product a buyer could certify the catch as in compliance in real time.

AI-Based Seabed Classification: Geology, Biota, and Man-made objects
Robotic-based seabed surveys now yield large volumes of sidescan data that are time consuming to process. As a result, detection of manmade objects is very difficult due to naturally occurring clutter (biological and geological). Develop and apply AI-based techniques to process sidescan data in a high clutter environment using data sets from global expeditions collected in support of finding archeological sites associated with WWII.
Project Recover Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Image Processing CatchReporter App DevelopmentDesign an app that incentivizes recreational fisherman to document their catch and utilize the information to aid marine conservation and fisheries management efforts.
The Nature Conservancy Keywords: Marine Conservation, App Development Remote Monitoring of Ocean StratificationDevelop a simulation tool for a novel remote sound speed profiler that uses a linear, bistatic array of 4 transducers. Apply the technique to case studies of measuring stratification in a variety of oceanic environments to assess value of this technique as compared to non-remote sensing techniques.
Teledyne Marine Keywords: Ocean Observing, Remote Sensing, Signal Processing Land to Sea Runoff - Eutrophication ManagementFind new viable pathways to tackle the nitrogen and phosphorous runoff problem.
Cowell Beach CleanupDesign a solution to improve water quality at one of the most polluted beaches in California that can be extrapolated for use in other regions.
Aiim Partners Keywords: Water Quality, Human Health Optimal Path Planning for Stock Assessment from an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) Design a mathematically optimal sampling plan using environmental models and USV flight behavior for stock assessment of marine fisheries.
Liquid Robotics, a Boeing Company Keywords: Fisheries Monitoring, Computer Science Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) on Research VesselsDevelop a user-friendly UAV-based system, for deployment on research vessels, that utilizes existing autonomous launch and landing technology and low-cost sensors to increase scientific measurements in the lower atmosphere and the sea surface.
Planck Aerosystems Keywords: Robotics, Environmental Monitoring |
